Below is a collection of a currently in-progress gallery show entitled “What is a Woman?: A Transfeminine Retrospective”, which features artwork exploring the shared experiences of the transfeminine community. It serves both as a gallery show and a reflective studio thesis project for the artist’s Masters of Arts in Studio Arts degree from the University of Northern Colorado.
The gallery utilizes the title “What is a Woman?” as a re-appropriation of the title of a transmisogynistic pseudo-scientific documentary by the same name, designed to disenfranchise transgender women and create further conditions for genocide. By reclaiming this title from transmisogynists and sexists, the artist seeks to place power over womanhood and it’s definition back into the hands of women, both cis and trans, rather than allowing a cisgender man to define the parameters of womanhood uncontested.
